As we expand our waste collection scheme across the Archipelago and witness the state of plastic pollution in some of the most ancient Swahili settlements, like Siyu, we’re reminded of the importance of protecting Lamu’s unique heritage which is a fusion of many early cultures that influence it’s boats and beautiful hand carvings. Our co-founder Ali Skanda comes from a family of traditional carpenters so we’re lucky to have his guidance on how to use our recycled plastic lumber to create heritage furniture pieces alongside our Head of Design, Katharina Elleke who are also training the next generation of carpenters to preserve this ancient craft. .
